From evidence to an independent view

An independent view is not simply a disagreement with consensus. It is a conclusion supported by reasoning that can be examined on its own merits.
Begin with the source material, identify the relevant mechanism and consider alternative explanations. A clear distinction between facts, estimates and interpretation makes the argument easier to assess.
The quality of the process is reflected in its openness to revision. New evidence should be able to change the conclusion without changing the standard used to evaluate it.
